Malaysia has been held up as role model from a transformation of a country from under developed status towards developed status. The country has broken out of a largely rural, agrarian economy an industrial economy at breakneck speed in the period between the 1970s to the present day.
While the results have been positive on the GDP, it is almost inevitable that Malaysia's environmental management will lag behind following a similar pattern in the OECD countries where industrial development boomed and environmental management was indifferent until forced by circumstances.
